A game drive at the Kruger National Park is a must. One of Africa’s largest game reserves, it’s filled with game and offers fantastic wildlife viewing.
2. Amarula Lapa
Visit the Amarula Lapa in Phalaborwa, which is home to the world-renowned Amarula Cream liqueur. There’s nothing better than a shot or two poured over a couple of ice cubes for a truly refreshing sundowner in the Limpopo heat. You can also sample other marula products and try dishes from the Amarula-inspired menu, as well as see the production process during harvest-time. Visit from mid-January to mid-March and watch as the fruit gets collected and its fruit pulp extracted, before it’s transported to Stellenbosch for the fermentation process.
Olifants River Safaris is another unusual way to experience the abundance of game life in Limpopo. We were on the Kambaku II boat for two hours spotting gigantic crocodiles, hippo, kudu, elephants, buffalo and giraffe on the banks of the river. Enjoy a cold drink while you cruise
4. Legend Golf & Safari Resort
The resort is a wonder on its own. Imagine hitting a hole-in-one from the top of a mountain. The golf resort is famed for its Extreme 19th hole (par 3) and you can only get there by helicopter. The Hanglip Mountain overlooks a green situated 400m below in the shape of Africa. Talk about extreme golfing. It’s set within the Entabeni Safari Conservancy where you can also enjoy game drives.
Mapungubwe National Park is a World Heritage Site so that alone makes it worth a visit. It also has the Mapungubwe Hills (the Lost City) when a rich, developed African tribe once existed, trading in ivory and gold with Egypt, India and China. This is where the famous golden rhino was discovered.
6. UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve
UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve will allow you to venture back in time as you view the incredible rock formations, Bushmen paintings and stretches of landscapes. Through a guided tour, you can find a lot to do in the area, including a visit to the Mokopane caves.
This tour will is a thrill and will get the blood pumping in places you never thought possible. Zip-line through the forest over the Groot Letaba river, waterfalls and forest floor with stops at 13 platforms. You can also experience quad-biking and paint ball.
It’s a treasure chest filled with stories about mysterious rainmaking powers, dynasty and tradition. Learn all about the story of Queen Modjadji, the only queen to rule a province in South Africa. Discover the ritual of rainmaking, which has been around for centuries and is still practised today.
Walk with Lions is not the title of a movie, but an actual activity offered at The Ranch Conservancy. It’s an unusual, but rewarding experience.
Sunland Big Baobab Tree is the largest baobab in the world and even has a bar inside. It’s over 1 700 years old and can be found in Modjadjiskloof. Estimated to be 22m high and 47m in circumferences, it looks like something out of a fairytale book
