There’s so much to discover and experience in Melbourne, but here are our top five reasons to visit the city.

5 reasons to visit Melbourne

The food

Melbourne is considered Australia’s food capital and is home to some of the world’s finest eateries. From Michelin-starred restaurants to hard-to-resist street food, Melbourne has it all for the foodie traveller. It is no surprise then that Melbourne hosted this year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, in which its own Attica was named Australia’s best restaurant for the fifth year in a row.

The street art

One for the street art-lovers, Melbourne is a canvas bursting with colour and texture. Melbourne Street Art Tours is a tour company run by actual street artists keen on sharing “who the artists of the street works are, what technical aspects are involved in spray-painting, stencil art and paste-ups, and the significant role the artists have played in making Melbourne one of the most important destinations in the world for street art,” according to its website.

Renowned festivals

For an even wider variety of the arts, look no further than the Melbourne Festival, which takes place in October across various venues in the city. The festival boasts dance, theatre, music, circus, visual arts, multimedia, outdoor and more. Other festivals that draw enthusiasts from far and wide to the city focus on design, comedy and film.

Hidden bars

If it’s a adventure that offers a signature choice of drink as a reward, then exploring Melbourne’s hidden bars may the answer. These bars, some of which are often found in the unlikeliest corners of the city, or are very covert, like the Jungle Boy, which is reportedly hidden behind the fake fridge door of a sandwich shop.

The Great Ocean Road

Along the south-eastern coast of Australia is The Great Ocean Road, which begins in Melbourne, unwinding into a 400km stretch of awe-inspiring views of the southern oceans. According to Australia.com, “this diverse and dramatic region is best explored over the course of a few days”, making it one of the world’s ultimate road trip routes.
