5 Bucket List Golf Courses to play in South Africa
- Gary Player Country Club, Sun City, North West: It’s an old favourite for a reason. As the home of the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge, generations of South African golfers have grown up admiring this course and dreaming of playing it. Even the professionals speak fondly of their first rounds here. It’s a must-play for every South African golfer.
- Steyn City, Gauteng: Fake a sick note, do the boss’s laundry – whatever. Just try and find some way to play one of the newest and most spectacular golf courses in SA. It’s a visual feast, and no expense has been spared in the creation of the course, or the award-winning clubhouse. You’ll be impressed, trust me.
- Durban Country Club, KwaZulu-Natal: Granted, this is not the golf course it once was. It’s fallen on hard times of late. But let’s face it, this is still one of the most historic golf courses in the country. And you need to play it for that reason alone. As the golf course that has hosted the South African Open more times than any other, a large chunk of our golf history has been played out on these hallowed fairways.
- Humewood Golf Club, Eastern Cape: For the same reason as Durban Country Club, you need to play this course, but with one difference. You play it in the worst weather, with howling wind and driving rain. If you’re not going to get to Britain to play a classic links course, then this is the closest you’ll get to the most traditional form of golf on the planet.
- The Links, Fancourt, Eastern Cape: How you find a way is up to you, but if you want to experience how badly a beast of a golf course can truly beat you up, then this is it. Humbling in every sense of the word, it’s always a reminder that no, you haven’t really figured out this game any more than you thought you had.
