The Best National Parks of Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi lies in south-western Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley. The park is most famous for the 340 Bwindi Mountain Gorillas that live there, half of the world’s population. This park is a sanctuary for chimpanzees, many birds and Columbus monkeys. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest became a Unesco World Heritage site in 1994 due to its ecological importance.

Kibale National Park

Kibale National Forest has one of the highest concentrations of primates in Africa. Chimpanzee trekking and habituation experiences are some of the main tourism attractions. The park is home to 13 species of primates, 325 species of birds and 70 species of other mammals.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga sits high in the clouds at an altitude of between 2 227m and
4 127m, forming part of the Virunga Conservation Area. It includes adjacent parks in Congo and Rwanda, and is home to the indigenous Batwa pygmies. Mgahinga was created to protect mountain gorillas and other primates, including golden monkeys.

Lake Mburo National Park

The smallest of Uganda’s Savannah National Parks, Lake Mburo still has plenty to offer visitors, being home to 350 bird species as well as leopard, hippo, buffalo and reedbuck.

Mount Elgon National Park

Declared as a Unesco Biosphere reserve, Mount Elgon is home to over 300 species of birds. Small antelopes, forest monkeys, elephants and buffalos can also be found in this extensive conservation area.

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area hosts 76 species of mammals and 451 species of birds. Murchison lies in north-western Uganda, spreading inland from the shore of Lake Albert around the Victoria Nile.

Kidepo Valley National Park

This national park lies in the far north-east of Uganda in the Karamoja region. Kidepo is known for its biodiversity, with a strong wilderness atmosphere, rugged mountain scenery and exceptional game viewing and bird watching.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Uganda’s most popular destination is located within the Albertine Rift Valley near Rwenzori Mountains. Designated a Unesco Biosphere Reserve for Humanity, the park is an ideal habitat for classic big game, ten primate species, including chimpanzees, and over 600 species of birds, including Shoebill.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park

The Rwenzori Mountains, well known as the Mountains of the Moon, lie in western Uganda along the border of Congo. The Rwenzories are a world-class hiking and mountaineering destination, and their snowy peaks offer the third-highest point in Africa, while the lower slopes are home to a moist montane forest with huge tree heathers and colourful mosses.

Semuliki National Park

Semuliki is one of the most ancient bio-diverse forests in the world, dominated by the eastern extension of the Ituri Forest of the Congo Basin. Its fauna is very rich, and there are over 400 bird species to be found there.
