From classic car shows to art and film festivals we’ve got you covered with all the hip and happening lifestyle and arts events going on across South Arica in July.
Lifestyle
Classic Car Show
7 July | Johannesburg
Nasrec plays host to Joburg’s next Classic Car Show, where gearheads and casual visitors get to admire a range of polished hot rods, classics and American muscle cars.
There will be live entertainment at the venue, in the unlikely event that souped-up autos fail to hold your attention.
Scottburgh Classic Show
7 July | Durban
Winter is the season for South Africans to dust off their classic motors.
This show in Scottburgh on the KZN South Coast features pre-1975 cars and motorcycles, with this year’s featured marque being the beautiful British MG. Dressing up (1940s to 1970s) is optional.
Franschhoek Bastille Festival Festival
13-14 July | Cape Town
The Cape Winelands’ French quarter flies its Tricolour with pride on Bastille Day, with art, food, music, wine and pretty much anything else you can think of.
Pack your berets and baguettes, and enjoy French fare alongside local traditions like the Porcupine Ridge Barrel Rolling Competition.
Mandela Day
18 July | nationwide
South Africa comes to a standstill for 67 minutes, marking Nelson Mandela’s birthday by performing small but meaningful acts of charity all across the country.
Each minute represents a year Mandela spent fighting for social justice, and the message behind the initiative is simple: everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better. Chip in, and see how you can help.
Arts
RMB Turbine Art Fair
12-14 July | Johannesburg
Now in its seventh edition, the RMB TAF has moved to a bigger venue at 10 Fricker Road in Illovo.
That larger space means more room to breathe for the wide range of galleries representing established and emerging local artists and collectives.
The fair has rapidly become a centre of emerging art in Africa, providing a platform for exhibitors to present and sell their works.
13 July | Pretoria
Potty-mouthed South African alt-rockers FPK celebrate 16 years on stage with an epic two-hour set at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, including deep cuts, rarities and songs you haven’t heard in ages. If you are into hard rock, you are in for a treat.
Durban International International Film Festival
18-28 July | Durban
South Africa’s longest-running film festival, DIFF presents over 180 screenings of current films from around the world, with a strong focus on South African and African cinema.
The winners of this festival’s Best International Documentary and Best SA Documentary awards automatically qualify for Oscar consideration… so, the quality is excellent, and the competition is tight.
