We’ve taken a look at some of the tastiest food and drink events taking place across South Africa this August and these are the ones you don’t want to miss.
The Chocolate Festival
31 August to 1 September | Stellenbosch
Chocolate, chocolate and even more chocolate – that is what you are guaranteed to find at this year’s Chocolate Festival! Heaven for any sweet-tooth fanatics, this two-day chocolate extravaganza takes place at The Woodmill in Stellenbosch. Balancing out the sweetness will be a selection of non-chocolate offerings that range from charcuterie, hamburgers, and pizzas to artisanal cheeses and breads.
Cape Winemakers Guild Showcase
21 August | Johannesburg
The Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Showcase – held in Sandton, far from the Cape vineyards in location, but not in spirit – offers a walk-around tasting of a selection of the CWG’s 2019 flagship and auction wines. The event also includes a silent auction of signed bottles or rare wines to raise funds for the Guild’s Protégé Programme.
The Mercury Wine Week
29 August to 30 August | Durban
Mercury Wine Week is KwaZulu-Natal’s largest wine show. It offers the ideal opportunity to search for new wines for sundowners, those hidden gems with which to impress friends and others just calling out for an old-fashioned South African braai after the rugby.
It brings together delicatessen food, wine exhibitors and hundreds of wines under the African skies from farms boasting histories spanning centuries to undiscovered boutiques wineries seeking a toe-hold to unexplored markets.
Hantam Vleisfees
30-31 August |Calvinia
Meat markets don’t get much more authentic than this. Held in Calvinia – the capital of Hantam Karoo country – this annual “Vleisfees” (literally, meat festival) celebrates its 30th edition in 2019, and promises a delicious showcase of seafood, burgers, traditional dishes, and, of course, local Karoo lamb.
