The discovery of gold and the story of how Johannesburg came to be is intriguing. Sadly much of the wonder attached to this history often gets lost in a traditional classroom setting.
Thankfully Gold Reef City Theme Park is providing the perfect backdrop for children with inquisitive minds to tap into the rich and enchanting history of how Johannesburg came to be and how gold was discovered on the reef.
The Theme Park’s Heritage Tours offers a magical trip down memory lane that begins with a movie in Rich Beginnings, where old Prospector Jo tells learners how gold was first discovered and Jozi came to be.
Underground Mine Tour

The next part of the tour sees learners taken on an actual underground Mine Tour, offering the heart-stopping feeling of travelling deep below the surface, feeling the cold air and touching the rough rock surface that held the wealth of a nation.
Gold Pour

They then get to experience a breath-taking gold pour demonstration. This unforgettable, magnificent molten liquid glow inspires the imagination of every child and encourages true creative learning.
After the gold pour, children get to pan gold through the mud in cold water, which encapsulates the euphoria of finding a shiny spec of gold in the dirt.
Museum Houses

And finally, a trip through the museum houses reveals what it was like to be a mine official in the good old days, how children were homeschooled without the internet and how families learnt what it meant to ‘waste not, want not’.
A history lesson has never been this interactive and fun! Learners can also visit the Science exploratory, where they can interact with science.
While the theme park’s Heritage Tours are ideal for school groups they’re a must-do for adults as well.
Prior booking is essential.
