Gone are the days of long queues, last-minute shopping and Christmas carols on repeat. Strauss & Co auctions is set to launch a convenient online auction just in time for the festive season, allowing you to access great wine at amazing prices, from anywhere, at any time.
SA’s first combined week-long Strauss & Co Fine Wine and Art online auction taps into the phenomenon of online auctions gaining traction globally in an increasingly connected space.
Bidding on this 18-25 November online auction means you’ll be able to pour yourself a glass of wine and browse through a carefully curated collection of fine wine and art in your own time.
The process is simple: don’t forget to register from the 18th onwards, then place your bids. Then step away from your screen and receive SMS and email bidding confirmation and updates.
And you’ll be spoiled for choice. Set to run from 18 to 25 November, the fine wine component of this online auction will feature 100 lots from 60 producers, in a range of the finest white, red and dessert wines in South Africa, all quality-controlled and stored at ideal conditions by the Strauss & Co expert wine partners.

Perfect Timing
Roland Peens, director of Wine Cellar fine wine merchants – WineCellar.co.za – and one of the partners in the fine wine program, commented:
“We believe that the timing of this online auction couldn’t be better. It’s an opportunity for seasoned winos, novice explorers, art lovers and festive shoppers to take their time to explore a range of vintages, styles and regions, properly inform themselves and secure the most exciting ones. The sale is open for a full week, and accessible by art and wine bidders from within South Africa and globally too,” says Roland.
Lots from icons such as Meerlust, Kanonkop, Klein Constantia and Sadie Family will be auctioned alongside more modern challengers such as Alheit, Ataraxia and Glenelly. A set of fine Bordeaux, a top Burgundy, Champagne and a Côte-Rôtie will complete an exciting wine wish list.

A South African First
This inaugural online auction follows on two successful Strauss & Co Fine Wine Auctions in Johannesburg and Cape Town this year, during which 81% of lots were sold, totalling R3.5m from 120 of the finest producers in South Africa and abroad.
Across the board shopping means that, for the first time in South Africa, you’ll be able to bid on painting, works on paper as well as books and portfolios and even sculpture at the same time as bidding on wine.
Strauss & Co’s November online auction encompasses over 600 lots of art, arranged into 7 sessions: Decorative Arts (Oriental), Young/Emerging Artists, Paintings and Sculpture, Works on Paper, Prints and Multiples, Books, and Fine Wine.

Artwork To Watch
Some of the standout art works that will catch prospective buyers’ attention are Sipho Ndlovu’s Mushrooms, which appears convincingly three dimensional although painted on a flat canvas, and Carl Becker’s quirky Oscars, one of the under-appreciated contemporary artist’s early works.
Carola Brotherton’s beautiful Midlands conjures up wistful recollections of travelling through the KwaZulu-Natal hinterland, while Trevor Coleman’s vivid colours in Street Vendors suggest sweltering summer days on a nameless Indian Ocean island.
Works from the Peter and Regina Strack Collection will again feature, including the master Namibian watercolourist Adolph Jentsch’s In der Winterzeit (In the Wintertime), a characteristic arid grassland scene.
Bid from anywhere and at any time on the fine wine and art lots of this combined Strauss & Co fine wine and art online auction which opens on Monday, 18th November at 8am and close on Monday, 25 November at 8pm.
