A cruise for every generation

Date:

Think the modern cruise ship promises nothing more than bingo nights and shuffleboard tournaments? Think again. Cruising simply isn’t reserved for retired married couples anymore.

The latest data from the Cruise Lines International Association State of the Cruise Industry Report 2024 reveals that today’s average cruiser is a sprightly 46 years old, and a whopping 36% of cruisers are under 40.  Even better? An impressive 84% of Gen X, 81% of Millennials, and even 74% of Gen Z who have dipped their toes into the cruising world say they can’t wait to do it again.

So, where is everyone cruising to? We check out the best destinations for every generation.

Gen X

An Asia Expedition

Generation X travellers often crave destinations that offer enriching learning experiences. With its rich cultural heritage, historical significance, and diverse environments, Asia perfectly aligns with these preferences.

Where it sails: Asia itineraries typically explore countries like Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam.

What’s in store: Energetic city exploration in Tokyo and Bangkok balanced with serene temples and ancient palaces. You’ll also enjoy the diverse local cuisine and soak up stunning landscapes like Ha Long Bay and the Great Wall of China.

Considerations: Keep in mind that flights to Asia can be lengthy, and visas may be required.

    An African Adventure

The regional cruises provide a fresh take on Africa and allow Gen Xers with families and jobs to stick closer to home for convenience.

Where it sails: Popular African countries and cities like Cape Town, Mossel Bay, Namibia, and Madagascar. Note that NCL’s Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Sky will be sailing Southern Africa waters  South Africa from November 2024.

What’s in store: See the magic beyond your doorstep – go on wildlife safaris, explore beautiful coastlines, encounter diverse cultures, and tuck into traditional African delicacies… all without any long-haul flights.

Considerations: Itineraries are generally available during the peak summer season, so booking flights and accommodations well in advance is recommended, even for local travellers. While most countries may not require visas, obtaining an online e-Visa for Madagascar and a travel authorisation for Mauritius may be necessary for travellers with a South African passport.

      Millennials

      An Alaskan Extravaganza

Millennials prioritise experiences that connect them with nature (and themselves). Alaska ticks these boxes. Plus, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime destination perfect for families, with plenty of kid-friendly activities and excursions.

Where it sails: Alaska itineraries explore the Inside Passage, with stops in ports like Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Glacier Bay National Park. A popular upcoming NCL Alaska cruise is the 7-day Alaska: Hubbard Glacier, Skagway & Juneau from Whittier, Alaska, sailing on 28 April, 12 May, 26 May, and 9 June 2025.

What’s in store: Gear up for towering glaciers, pristine fjords, and abundant wildlife. Explore charming port towns, take a helicopter ride over ice fields, go whale watching, or hike through lush rainforests.

Considerations: Alaska is a popular cruise destination, especially during peak summer months, so booking early is recommended to secure your preferred itinerary and cabin.

        A Caribbean Crusade

A Caribbean cruise is the ultimate antidote to the daily grind for many Millennials. Additionally, the shorter sailings (typically 5-7 days) allow for easy combination with a visit to the mainland U.S., making it a fantastic option for those seeking sun, new experiences, and a chance to recharge.

Where it sails: Caribbean itineraries cover many islands, including the Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

What’s in store: What could be better than lounging on beaches, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and snorkelling amongst colourful coral reefs? Add to that exploring historic towns and indulging in Caribbean cuisine for a truly idyllic cruising getaway.

Considerations: Like Alaska, the Caribbean can be a popular cruise destination, so booking early is advised, especially if you’re travelling during peak season or have a specific itinerary in mind. Don’t forget to ensure plenty of time to get your visas sorted!

          Gen Z

          A Mediterranean Affair

The Mediterranean is a treasure trove of Instagram-worthy backdrops, from the colourful houses of Cinque Terre to the white-washed buildings of Santorini. Gen Z travellers will find plenty of opportunities for unique experiences and photo ops, whether it’s exploring hidden coves, attending a local festival, or simply enjoying the nightlife in cities like Barcelona and Mykonos.

Where it sails: Iconic destinations like Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, and Turkey.

What’s in store: Marvel at ancient ruins, stroll through charming villages, eat your fill of Mediterranean food at waterfront cafes, bask in the sun on picturesque beaches, and dance the night away at trendy beach clubs.

Considerations: The peak season in the Mediterranean (typically June-August) can bring larger crowds to popular destinations, so consider travelling during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) for a more relaxed experience.

            A Transatlantic Trip

It’s a chance to gain bragging rights among friends and create memories that will last a lifetime – a top choice for a gap year adventure if funds allow. Transatlantic cruises can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you opt for an inside cabin or travel during the off-season.

Where it sails: These itineraries typically include stops in destinations like Iceland, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal.

What’s in store: An epic journey across the Atlantic Ocean, with several days at sea to enjoy the onboard amenities, relax by the pool and soak up the sun. Depending on your itinerary, you may also explore unique ports of call, like Reykjavik’s geothermal pools or Dublin’s historic pubs.

Considerations: Be prepared for several days at sea, so you’ll need to be proactive in planning activities and entertainment to fill your time.

“At Norwegian Cruise Line, we believe that incredible at-sea holidays should be accessible to everyone,” says Kevin Bubolz, NCL’s VP and Managing Director Continental Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

“Our Free at Sea offers, combined with the all-inclusive nature of cruising, make it possible for travellers to experience the world without breaking the bank. From unlimited dining at various restaurants to world-class entertainment, there’s so much included in your fare, making budgeting a breeze,” he adds.

So, don’t let outdated stereotypes hold you back – there really is a cruise for every generation, and the time to book is now.
