Jozi Under the Sun

Date:

Johannesburg, often affectionately called Jozi, is a city of contrast where modern luxury meets deep-rooted history, and vibrant creativity blends seamlessly with urban sophistication. I was fortunate enough to join a mini exploration of the city as a guest on Southern Sun’s Jozi Under the Sun Media Tour which promised to capture this spirit over two immersive days, exploring five hotels, four cultural gems, and the very essence of Johannesburg’s warmth and charm.

The Ultimate Stay and Dine Experience

Our adventure began at the recently refurbished Sandton Towers in the heart of Johannesburg’s bustling financial district. After a quick check-in and exploration of my room, we were whisked away to Southern Sun Katherine Street.

This hidden gem, which is located in the heart of Sandton, is a leafy retreat that offers a home-away-from-home feel. It’s spacious rooms combined with the hotel’s SunPet offering make this the perfect long stay retreat for animal lovers in the city. After a look at some of the rooms, a visit to the newly relaunched Kelsey’s Restaurant set the tone for a refined yet relaxed experience, with stylish interiors and a menu bursting with flavour.

Our group was charged with putting our taste buds to the test with a quick game of guess the ingredient. While I didn’t participate my taste buds had plenty to do thanks to the spread of canapés provided by the Chef.

Next, a short drive led to Southern Sun Sandton, where a tour of its stunning refurbishment revealed opulent upgrades and awe-inspiring executive rooms. As dusk settled over the city, we were treated to breathtaking views of the Johannesburg skyline in the sleek Sky Bar for a cocktail and canapé pairing featuring Brandy, one of South Africa’s favourite spirits.

As evening arrived the experience shifted back to the Sandton Towers, where a tour of the property revealed spaces that blend modern sophistication with the Towers’ signature architectural style. The revitalisation has touched every part of the hotel with all 28 floors upgraded from the guest rooms and corridors to a complete overhaul of the Club Floor, Atrium Restaurant, rooftop pool, and deck.

Even the service levels have received an overhaul according to General Manager Jacques Heath who pointed out that the butlers receiving focused training to raise the standard of hospitality in line with Southern Sun’s premium offering.

Following the tour we were treated to a mixology session which introduced our group to bespoke cocktails, followed by a delightful dinner at The Atrium. I was hesitant about how my dairy allergy would affect my overall dining experience however the team at Sandton Towers made every effort to ensure I was included. My starter, a seared loin of tuna, oriental salad and lemon grass dressing was undoubtedly my favourite dish of the day. For mains I enjoyed Scottish Salmon, sweet potato and ginger pureé, miso vegetables and yuzu.

After a whirlwind afternoon I retreated to the quiet luxury of my room just before midnight.

A Cultural and Culinary Discovery

Day two kicked off with a hearty breakfast complete with ginger shots at Sandton Towers, and our journey continued with a deep dive into Johannesburg’s history. The first stop, Liliesleaf in Rivonia and then Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Houghton, offered a profound look into South Africa’s liberation struggle, bringing history to life through compelling exhibits and personal stories.

As we made our way through this reflective part of our trip I decided that I would need to return to some of the sites for another visit to take in everything we were learning as time started to get away from us on this trip.

A bus ride later we arrived in Rosebank for Lunch at 54 on Bath’s Level 4 which provided a sophisticated retreat. I was once again accommodated by the Chef and felt much better when I found out that another member of our group had a food allergy that needed accommodating. Our afternoon of elegant dining was complemented by a playful round of croquet on the manicured lawns—an experience that balanced indulgence with classic charm.

While 54 on Bath is incredibly luxurious there is an almost Alice in Wonderland whimsy that you experience at Level 4 that makes this one of my favourite spaces in the city. In November 2024, 54 on Bath reopened its refreshed terrace and redesigned Level 4 Bar, bringing a fresh experience to the hotel. The Level 4 Bar now offers an enhanced experience through its partnership with Hendrick’s Gin. The updated space offers guests an inviting spot to enjoy premium drinks and indulgent dining or playing croquet on the lawns.

Level 4 Terrace also continues to offer its popular tea experience, a must for those who appreciate refined flavours. Traditional Afternoon Tea is available Sunday to Friday from 14:30 to 16:30, in the elegant surroundings of the Level 4 Restaurant, Bar and Terrace. This experience includes premium teas, with a guided tea presentation and an assortment of savoury and sweet treats – from classic English sandwiches to freshly baked scones with cream and preserves.

Feeling fully satiated we made our way across the Hotel’s skywalk to the Rosebank Art & Craft Market for a celebration of Johannesburg’s vibrant creative scene. As we walked through the market connecting with local artisans and discovering the intricate beauty of traditional craftsmanship a pink beaded flamingo keyring caught my eye and I bought it for my daughter.

The final treat awaited at Southern Sun Rosebank, where relaxation met refined luxury. This recently revamped hotel offered a sanctuary of spa serenity and culinary flair, allowing guests to unwind in an atmosphere of understated elegance before heading back to Sandton Towers.

Southern Sun’s extensive series of refurbishments across these five key hotels in Sandton and Rosebank, represent a significant investment into Johannesburg’s premier travel and business hubs, as well as South African hospitality and tourism.

Throughout the experience, Southern Sun’s General Managers provided valuable insights into the philosophy behind each property, offering a glimpse into the service excellence that defines the brand. But beyond the luxury and comfort, Jozi Under the Sun was an invitation to explore Johannesburg through a lens of culture, history, and hospitality.

From high-end dining to grassroots creativity, from opulent hotel suites to deeply moving historical sites, this two-day journey captured the city’s essence—one of resilience, reinvention, and remarkable warmth.
