Tucked between the Langeberg mountains and the wide-open skies of the Klein Karoo, Montagu is the kind of place that invites you just to breathe.

It’s known for its dried fruit, mountain climbing culture, and nearby wine farms, but on a recent visit to Montagu Country Hotel with Cape Country Routes, I quickly discovered that a visit to Montagu is also about redefining what luxury and wellness can look like.
Wellness has become the buzzword in global travel trends, and when one thinks of booking a wellness holiday, it typically conjures up images of yoga retreats in Bali or high-end detox spas in Europe. But for me, the definition of wellness looks beyond this. As a family travelling with young kids, wellness isn’t so much about pampering and quiet but more about experiences that focus on connection, nature, and allowing myself to be present, not just for personal reasons but for the sake of my children.
On this most recent trip, we were based at the Montagu Country Hotel, a Cape Country Routes member and an owner-run and managed hotel that gives one the feeling of stepping into a glamorous time capsule. Think art deco elegance meets small-town charm. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and so do you. Our gloriously spacious luxury studio with its own lounge, double bed, twin beds, balcony and bathroom big enough for a family of four to comfortably get ready in the mornings, overlooked manicured gardens, an inviting plunge pool, and the distant mountains — an ideal spot for early morning tea and connection. But the real indulgence came in the form of their offerings.
Here, wellness isn’t confined to a massage table, it’s woven into the rhythm of your stay. Mornings begin with a generous breakfast spread, served with Karoo warmth and the kind of care that encourages you to linger. Fresh fruit, eggs to order and a bowl of delicious scones with jam set the tone for unhurried days ahead. In fact, mealtimes at the hotel are mindful experiences in themselves, with two restaurants to choose from, each celebrating local ingredients and the joy of slow, satisfying dining.
Whether you’re enjoying a delicious multi-course dinner in the elegant Charlestons dining room where dishes like grilled sole, baby marrow soup and Karoo roast leg of lamb grace the menu or a more relaxed lunch under the trees at Feathers & Flatcaps while the kids play on the jungle gym, the focus is on nourishment that comforts as much as it delights.
Beyond the table, wellness reveals itself in simple pleasures. Two swimming pools, both tucked among fragrant flowers in the garden, offer serene spaces to cool off, stretch out, or simply float beneath the sun. It’s an invitation to slow down, breathe deeper, and reconnect. And of course the hotel also offers a full-service spa for your more traditional wellness offering.
The hotel also reflects the Cape County Route brand’s ethos of authentic South African hospitality and unique local experiences. Its owner’s touch is something I felt in every interaction, every thoughtful detail.
A short drive away, I also visited the famous hot springs, fed by mineral waters that have been soothing weary bodies since the 1800s. Soaking in the pools while dassies played around us and the sun dipping behind the mountains felt both grounding and luxurious.
Between indulgent dinners and warming soaks, I wandered the quiet streets, popping into farm stalls for dried peaches and homemade rusks, or sitting under the trees with a glass of wine in hand. I even visited a historic church for a browse through the local crafters market. Montagu’s beauty lies in these simple pleasures, it’s wellness without the pretense but all of the calm. And it might just be South Africa’s most unassuming luxury escape.
