The Mauritius Essentials

  • Language: English is the official language of Mauritius, although a French-based creole is spoken widely.
  • Currency: The Mauritian Rupee is the national currency, with most major credit cards accepted.
  • Electronics: Pack your adaptors, because British-style plugs with three square pins and continental plugs with two round pins are generally in use.
  • Tipping: Tipping is not expected, but definitely welcomed.
  • Clothes: Dress conservatively when visiting temples and shrines.
  • Streetsmart: Avoid buying products and using services from unauthorised people.
  • Getting Around: There is a fairly good bus system, which usually runs from 05:30 to 20:00, but a rental car is your best bet if you plan to explore the island.

While You Are There, Also…

See the Seven Coloured Earths in Chamarel

A natural phenomenon, which evolved through the conversion of basaltic lava to clay minerals, the sand dunes here have seven distinct colours (ranging from a variation of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow).

Sample street food at the markets

Local Creole cuisine is delicious and packs a spicy punch. Enjoy the full experience at the many food markets, best washed down with fresh coconut water or a Mauritian beer.
