The Connected Traveller: New Tech and Delightful Disneyland

Tech journalist and frequent traveller Nafisa Akabor looks at new tech you can use on your travels.

And just like that, the year is over! This December, we’re looking at the iPhone 11 Pro and an Energizer feature phone; Canon’s new instant camera; and the Thule EnRoute Backpack.

Oh, and affordable data plans to go with that new smartphone.

Canon Zoemini S

Canon’s new dinky little Zoemini S will appeal to travellers who want to create hard copylasting memories.

The instant camera shoots in 8MP, and has a selfie-mirror, but it also pairs with a smartphone so you can print from your camera roll.

The cute credit-cardsized printouts are also stickers and additional packs are sold separately.

Price: R2 600. Available from Loot

iPhone 11 Pro

Apple iPhone 11 Pro

The iPhone 11 Pro’s updated trio of cameras finally includes an ultra-wideangle lens – any traveller’s delight

It’s the best way to capture some of the larger sights in any city. The 11 Pro also has a new dedicated night mode, as well as better photo editing tools.

Another major update is a bigger battery, which is a noticeable improvement.

Price: R21 999 (64GB). Available from MyiStore

Thule EnRoute

Thule EnRoute 14L Backpack

If you often find yourself in an airport, a goodquality backpack is a must.

Thule’s EnRoute range is fantastic for travel because of its various compartments, which make it easy to access laptops, tablets, water bottles, wallets and more without fumbling around at the security checkpoint.

The range is available in fun colours – because who says backpacks have to be boring?

Price: R1 499.

Energizer Energy 100

Energizer Energy 100

If you’re going hiking, mountain climbing or doing any extreme sport, Energizer’s rugged feature phone, the Energy 100, is right up your alley

This phone retains charge for up to two weeks and can handle falls and splashes. It has dual SIM support, and a basic camera. It’s best suited as a secondary travel handset.

Price: R699. Available from Takealot

Telkom Mobile

Telkom Mobile Data

Telkom’s new SIM-only data plans with Vodacom as a roaming partner means you can take a road trip in South Africa with good coverage all over, at affordable rates.

Data bundles range from R40 for 1GB up to R355 for 20GB, and the data is valid for two calendar months.

Night Surfer gives you the same amount of additional data allocation to be used from midnight to 7am only.

Delightful Disneyland

I visited Disneyland in Anaheim, California, a couple of months ago, and for the first time experienced “The Happiest Place on Earth. It doesn’t matter how old you are – it really is a Magic Kingdom.

The Californian theme park is often described as a “parking lot” compared to Disney World in Florida, but I found it to be the perfect size for a three-day park visit to take it all in.

It is also home to the new Star Wars section, Galaxy’s Edge, that has the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride, amongst other themed entertainment attractions, as well as shops and restaurants.

Disneyland Park and Disneyland California Adventure Park are located side by side, and are both bound to keep you busy for a couple of days.

The Disneyland app was quite impressive, as it allowed me to make restaurant bookings, check waiting times for rides, scan physical tickets into a digital version, and had an interactive map of the whole place.

It makes you wonder how we ever coped without technology. A bucketlist destination for all Star Wars fans!
