A little Brazil, a lot of Karoo

Date:

The Caipirinha is a Brazilian classic for a reason. Made with cachaça, fresh lime, sugar and ice, it’s a simple, citrus-forward cocktail that captures the spirit of long, sun-soaked afternoons. But what happens when this much-loved drink takes a detour through the Karoo?

South African distillery Six Dogs has an answer: the Karoo Caipirinha, a local take that swaps Brazil’s traditional cachaça for Six Dogs Karoo Gin, bringing dry botanicals and subtle citrus notes to the familiar mix of lime, sweetness, and crushed ice.

The result is a refreshing, aromatic cocktail with a distinctly South African character. Think long lunches, summer braais and late afternoons under wide-open skies.

Rather than trying to improve on a classic, Six Dogs approached the cocktail as an opportunity to experiment, reimagining familiar ingredients through the lens of the Karoo.

A cocktail with a sense of place

At the heart of the Karoo Caipirinha is Six Dogs Karoo Gin, the distillery’s original gin, developed over more than two years and 187 iterations. Its botanical profile draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, incorporating Karoo thorn flower, wild lavender, lemon buchu, limes and mandarins.

These ingredients give the gin its bright, aromatic character, complementing the cocktail’s fresh citrus while adding layers of flavour.

Swapping cachaça for gin changes the drink’s character without losing the simplicity that makes the Caipirinha so appealing. Fresh lime, sweetness, and crushed ice remain central to the experience, while gin adds a local botanical twist.

It’s a cocktail meant to be enjoyed slowly, whether at a leisurely lunch, around a fire with friends, or on a warm afternoon when you have nowhere else to be.

From a shed in the Karoo to a distinctive gin

Six Dogs began in 2013, when three friends, brothers Charles and Glenn Bryant and their friend Luigi Marucchi, set out to do things differently. Their first still was built from an old copper geyser in a shed where their six dogs slept, giving the distillery both its name and its unconventional beginnings.

Today, Six Dogs distils its spirits in the Western Cape, on the fringe of the Karoo. The surrounding landscape continues to influence its approach to distilling, with indigenous botanicals and a spirit of experimentation informing its creations.

The Karoo Caipirinha is a natural extension of that philosophy: taking a familiar favourite, following a new idea and seeing where it leads.

With its combination of Brazilian cocktail culture and South African botanical character, the drink offers another way to experience the flavours of the Karoo, one glass at a time.
