Port Louis has been ranked as the top African city for expat, according to the 2018 Quality of Living Survey by global consulting firm Mercer. Factors around quality of living affecting expatriates in popular assignment destinations are considered in 231 countries.

Ongoing research on the practicalities of daily life for these expatriate employees and their families forms the basis of our annual ranking of the quality of living in many prevalent assignment locations,” states Mercer.

The Mauritian capital, which is ranked 83rd on the list, is closely followed by South African cities Durban, in 89th place, Cape Town in 94th, and Johannesburg in 95th place. As part of the 20th Anniversary of the Mercer QOL(1998-2018) report, Maputo accounted for the highest increase in quality of living in Africa.

The list was ultimately dominated by Austria’s capital, Vienna, for the 9th consecutive year. Zurich (Switzerland) took second place, followed by Auckland (New Zealand) and Munich (Germany) in joint third place.

In a separate sanitation ranking – an important factor that influences a city’s competitiveness for attracting talent and business – Honolulu (Hawaii) ranked first, followed by Ottawa (Canada) and Helsinki (Finland) in joint second place, and then by Minneapolis (USA) in fourth and Auckland in fifth.
