Sanctuary Mandela launches Dine Like Madiba experience

Date:

Sanctuary Mandela has lauched a new dining experience that invites global travellers, food enthusiasts, and cultural connoisseurs to “Dine Like Madiba”. This intimate culinary journey celebrates the life, legacy, and favourite dishes of Nelson Mandela.

Set within the walls of Mandela’s former residence in Houghton, Johannesburg—now transformed into a boutique hotel and cultural sanctuary—guests are offered more than just a meal; they are invited to engage with South African heritage through the lens of food, storytelling, and connection.

The “Dine Like Madiba” experience features choices from the set menu inspired by the traditional meals Nelson Mandela loved most, with dishes curated in consultation with Chef Xoliswa Ndoyiya, affectionately known as Mam’Xoli. Having served as Madiba’s personal chef for over two decades, Mam’Xoli now plays an advisory role (Chef de Tournant) to the head chef, ensuring that each dish authentically reflects the flavours that brought comfort and joy to Mandela throughout his life.

Guests are invited not only to taste Madiba’s favourites but to sit with Mam’Xoli herself, as she hosts, interacts, and shares stories about the man behind the legacy—bringing a deeply personal and human perspective to each course.

Dine Like Madiba Set Menu Dishes Include:

Cape Malay Style Fish, North African Chicken Tagine, Samp & Mfino “Risotto”, Coconut & Lime Seabass, Barozzi Cake, Mixed Berry Sorbet.

“Food was Madiba’s way of expressing love and unity,” says Chef Ndoyiya. “Through these meals, we honour his memory and share the warmth and generosity he extended to all.”

The “Dine Like Madiba” experience is more than a dining event—it’s an immersive cultural offering, connecting guests to the soul of South African heritage and the enduring spirit of Nelson Mandela.
