Jazz lovers can look forward to an inspiring evening as Jazz In The City returns this winter with the next instalment of its acclaimed Inter-Generational Conversations series. This time, legendary guitarist Madala Kunene shares the stage with renowned musician Sibusile Xaba.
Set for 8 pm on Wednesday, 29 July at the Homecoming Centre in District Six, the concert celebrates how music bridges generations and honours South Africa’s vibrant musical heritage.
The Inter-Generational Conversations series began in March with a memorable performance from father-and-son duo Steve and Bokani Dyer, highlighting the lasting influence of one of South Africa’s celebrated musical families.
Spiritual and modern
Now, the focus shifts to Kunene and Xaba. Their collaboration weaves together jazz, malombo, maskandi and Zulu blues, creating music that feels both spiritual and refreshingly modern.
Madala Kunene is widely considered one of South Africa’s most influential guitarists. His distinctive sound is shaped by his upbringing in Durban’s Cato Manor, earning him international acclaim for music that is both traditional and deeply moving.
Sibusile Xaba has emerged as one of South Africa’s most innovative contemporary musicians, reimagining maskandi and avant-garde styles through his unique artistic vision. His expressive guitar work and spiritual energy make him a standout performer.

Together, these artists create a rare musical dialogue, honouring tradition while embracing innovation. Their performance goes beyond music; it’s a celebration of cultural continuity, artistic mentorship, and the enduring art of African storytelling.
