As Gauteng shivers under a layer of winter frost and the Cape keeps a keen eye out for the next cold front’s lashing rain, savvy travellers are heading from KuGompo City to Port St. Johns to soak up what many believe to be the best time of year on the lush Wild Coast.
While many visitors know the historic Morgan Bay Hotel for its warm hospitality and spectacular ocean views, it also serves as the perfect gateway to one of South Africa’s most adventure-filled coastlines.
With the sun rising out of the Indian Ocean, winter brings a few magical months of warm days and blue skies tailor-made for exploring. Throw in the fact that the only traffic you’re likely to encounter is a herd of cows meandering along the sand, and it’s easy to see why winter is the secret season for discovering the Wild Coast.
Whether it’s your first visit or a long-awaited return, here are 10 ways to explore South Africa’s most beautiful coastline:
1. Take a hike
The rolling hills of the Wild Coast are a paradise for hikers. The four-night Pondo Trail acts as the poster child for luxury slackpacking, while the Wild Coast Meander guides travellers through historic, family-owned hotels.
For an unforgettable day-hike, the clifftop trail between Morgan Bay and Double Mouth treats hikers to panoramic sea views, birdwatching, and a wander through a rare pocket of indigenous forest.
2. Saddle up
From the stables at Kei Mouth Country Club, Wild Coast Horse Trails offers a range of horseback adventures. Beginners can enjoy gentle, walk-only beach rides.
More experienced riders can book the Morgan Bay Cliff-Top Ride, a two-and-a-half-hour route combining beach paths, cliff-top views, and photo stops high above the Indian Ocean. Full-day trails even include lunch, ferry crossings, and waterfall swims.
3. Paddle out
There is no shortage of great surf along the Wild Coast, and winter, with its clean swell and offshore winds, is the prime time to paddle out. One of the most memorable waves is Keightley’s, a right-hander peeling around the rocky point west of Morgan Bay.
Featuring a technical take-off over a reef, it is a secret spot best left to experienced surfers when conditions are right.
4. Ride the pont
Cross the Great Kei River the old-fashioned way: by pontoon. The Kei Mouth ferry nudges cars, hikers, and cyclists from the village toward the shores of the former Transkei, turning a routine river crossing into a micro-adventure.
It remains one of the last working vehicle pontoons in South Africa and a popular gateway for road-trippers heading north toward Coffee Bay (just remember your handbrake!).
5. Go whale-watching
From June to November, Humpback and Southern right whales migrate along this coastline, while dolphins are resident year-round.
While it is not unusual to spot them right from your hotel breakfast table, packing a pair of binoculars and climbing the kranzes and dunes around Morgan Bay and Kei Mouth offers the best views.
6. Dangle on a rope
Morgan Bay Adventures capitalises on the area’s dramatic coastal krantzes by offering thrilling abseiling and rock-climbing excursions.
The highlight is a 24-metre abseil high above the ocean, with crashing waves and sea air adding intense drama to the descent. Climbers can choose from top-rope, sport, and traditional climbing routes.
7. Feel twitchy?
With a rich mix of estuaries, rivers, coastal ecosystems, and forested dune belts, the Wild Coast is a haven for birders.
African fish eagles, kingfishers, and hundreds of coastal and forest species await birders looking to add to their Lifer lists. Take a stroll with binoculars or book a Fish Eagle Cruise on the Great Kei River to boost your tally.
8. Search for buried treasure
At Double Mouth Nature Reserve, the sand occasionally shares historical secrets. In 1608, the Portuguese galleon Santo Espiritu was wrecked offshore, scattering cargo along what is now known as Treasure Beach.
Following big tides or winter storms, sharp-eyed walkers can search the sands for colourful carnelian beads, polished by 400 years of pounding surf.
9. Take a little me-time
After a day of high adventure, pampering awaits at the Milkwood Spa in Morgan Bay.
Choose a hideaway treatment room or enjoy a massage on the sun-splashed deck to a soundtrack of the sea. The signature treatment is the Synergy Four-hand Massage, designed to soothe tired muscles, complemented by an on-site sauna and steam room.
Alternatively, settle onto the hotel’s deck with a good book and a signature cocktail to let the sweeping ocean views slow you down.
10. Sip on craft beer
After an active day out, earn a cold one at Emerald Vale Brewing Co., a farm-based craft brewery outside Chintsa. Their four distinct ales are ideal for winter sips, available at the farm brewery and select regional restaurants. Back at the hotel, The Deck in Morgan Bay lets you pair these local craft brews with beer-friendly food and fine sea views.
“For 80 years, our family has had the privilege of welcoming guests to Morgan Bay and watching them fall in love with this remarkable stretch of coastline,” says Richard Warren-Smith, third-generation manager and grandson of original founder Ivan Warren-Smith.
“Winter is one of our favourite seasons to share with guests because it’s quieter, beautifully mild, and the perfect time to explore everything the area has to offer.”
