Looking ahead: The AVBOB benefit designed for life at 65

Date:

Planning for the future is about more than knowing where your next holiday will take you. It is also about making sure the people and things that matter most are looked after, and understanding the value of the financial products you already have in place.

For AVBOB members, that value includes the organisation’s 65Alive Cash Benefit, which has returned billions of rands to qualifying policyholders.

AVBOB has announced a R15 billion Special Bonus through its 65Alive Cash Benefit for qualifying members. The allocation, made on 1 December 2025, represents the organisation’s seventh Special Bonus. Over the past two financial years, AVBOB has allocated a total of R28 billion through the benefit.

For members, it is an example of how AVBOB’s mutual model can translate into additional value over the lifetime of a policy.

What is the 65Alive Cash Benefit?

The 65Alive Cash Benefit is allocated to members at the time of declaration. Qualifying members can claim the benefit when they reach 65, provided their policies have been active for at least 10 years.

The benefit is one of the ways AVBOB’s mutual structure allows members to share in the value created by the organisation.

More than R357 million has already been paid to qualifying members who have claimed their 65Alive Cash Benefit.

The value of mutuality

Unlike a traditional company with external shareholders, AVBOB operates as a mutual society. This means that its members are at the heart of the organisation, with profits shared among members in addition to standard policy benefits.

The model is designed to keep value within the member community, while also allowing AVBOB to reinvest in its funeral, insurance and investment products.

For members, this means their relationship with AVBOB can extend beyond the immediate benefits of their policy, with potential value accruing over the longer term.

Keeping track of your benefits

Financial planning is easier when you know what you are entitled to. AVBOB sends policyholders an annual communication by post, SMS or email outlining relevant policy benefits, bonuses and any allocations related to the 65Alive Cash Benefit.

It is therefore important that members keep their contact details up to date so that they don’t miss important information about their policies.

When you become eligible to claim your 65Alive Cash Benefit, the process can be completed through AVBOB’s self-service portal.

Looking beyond today

Whether you’re planning a family holiday, preparing for retirement, or simply trying to build greater financial security, understanding the benefits of your existing policies is an important part of planning for the future.

For qualifying AVBOB members, the 65Alive Cash Benefit is designed to provide an additional financial benefit when they reach 65, while AVBOB’s mutual model aims to ensure that the value generated by the Society continues to benefit its members.
