From Johannesburg to the Jungle: Amazon is worth every kilometre

Date:

A little over an hour from Johannesburg, Amazon at Menlyn proves that a great meal is about more than just good food. From expertly grilled meats and beautifully plated seafood to exceptional service and an atmosphere that evolves from relaxed lunch spot to vibrant nightlife destination, this Pretoria restaurant delivers an experience worth travelling for.

Sometimes the best meals require a little extra effort. For us, that meant an hour’s drive from Johannesburg to Pretoria’s Menlyn precinct to experience Amazon, and by the time dessert arrived, we agreed it was a journey we’d happily make again.

Amazon isn’t simply a restaurant. It’s a cocktail bar, social destination and late-night hotspot wrapped into one striking space inspired by the energy and flavours of South America. The interiors immediately set the mood, balancing lush greenery, warm timber finishes and dramatic lighting to create a space that feels sophisticated yet welcoming. Even during the day, there’s an unmistakable buzz that hints at what the venue transforms into after dark.

But while the design draws you in, it’s the food that keeps you there.

A menu made for sharing

Amazon’s menu is extensive, featuring everything from flame-grilled steaks and seafood to ceviche, sushi and sharing plates. Rather than overthinking our choices, we put our trust in our waiter, Phuti, whose recommendations proved spot on from start to finish.

We began with the Crispy Squid, grilled chilli-lime squid served with avo salsa, charred corn and lime aioli. It arrived looking almost too beautiful to eat, bursting with colour and freshness. Thankfully, it tasted every bit as impressive as it looked. The smoky squid paired perfectly with the creamy avocado and bright citrus notes, creating a starter that felt both indulgent and surprisingly light.

The Lamb Riblets quickly became another favourite. Slow-cooked before being finished over the flame with a delicate glaze, they were everything good riblets should be: incredibly tender, sticky, sweet and packed with flavour. The meat fell effortlessly from the bone, making them impossible to stop eating.

Fire, flavour and perfectly cooked seafood

For mains, my husband chose the 350g Picanha, one of Amazon’s signature dishes. Flame-grilled over hardwood, the beef arrived perfectly rested and sliced, with its fat cap rendered beautifully crisp and finished with burnt sage butter and smoked salt.

Each bite was wonderfully tender, almost melt-in-your-mouth soft, while the accompanying creamy mash and seasonal vegetables rounded out a dish that showcased just how good simple ingredients can be when treated with care.

I opted for the Grilled Queen Prawns, eight shell-on prawns cooked over an open flame and served with lemon butter dipping sauce. Beautifully cooked and full of natural sweetness, they struck the perfect balance after our generous starters. The portion was substantial without feeling heavy, leaving just enough room for what would become the highlight of the evening.

Save room for dessert

If there’s one piece of advice we’d offer future diners, it’s this: don’t skip dessert. My husband chose the Cheesecake of the Day, freshly baked and rich without being overly heavy. I ordered the Chocolate Lava Cake, and it may well have been the best dessert I’ve eaten all year.

Rather than relying solely on rich chocolate, the plate offered thoughtful contrasts in flavour and texture. Creamy vanilla ice cream, fresh fruit, crisp biscuit crumble and a beautifully balanced sauce, with what tasted like a subtle hint of black pepper, cut through the sweetness and elevated every bite. It was indulgent without becoming overwhelming, and the kind of dessert that lingers in your memory long after you’ve left the restaurant.

Cocktails without the alcohol

Amazon’s cocktail menu is as adventurous as its food, showcasing tropical flavours alongside premium spirits, champagne and an impressive wine list. Signature creations include the house Caipirinha, but we opted to enjoy two cocktails as mocktails instead.

The Iguana, a vibrant blend of pineapple, lime, mint and orgeat, was wonderfully refreshing, while the Jungle Dax delivered bold citrus flavours balanced with warming spices.

Neither drink felt like a compromise. They were expertly made, full of flavour and proof that alcohol-free cocktails can be every bit as satisfying as their spirited counterparts.

More than a meal

Perhaps what impressed us most wasn’t any single dish but the overall experience.

The service throughout dinner was warm, knowledgeable and attentive without ever feeling intrusive. Phuti’s recommendations were excellent, and when we mentioned how much we were enjoying the music, he even helped us get our hands on the restaurant’s playlist, a thoughtful touch that perfectly summed up the level of hospitality we experienced.

The soundtrack itself deserves a mention. Carefully curated and effortlessly cool, it complemented the space beautifully and set the tone for a long, leisurely dinner.

As afternoon turns into evening, Amazon takes on an entirely different personality. The lights dim, the music becomes more energetic, and the venue evolves into one of Pretoria’s standout nightlife destinations, with DJs performing every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It’s this ability to seamlessly transition from relaxed lunch venue to sophisticated evening hotspot that makes Amazon stand out.

The verdict

Great restaurants leave you planning your next visit before you’ve even paid the bill. Amazon does exactly that.

From beautifully executed South American-inspired dishes and standout desserts to exceptional service, creative cocktails and an atmosphere that effortlessly shifts with the time of day, every element feels thoughtfully considered.

For Johannesburg diners, the drive to Menlyn may seem like a commitment. After one visit, however, it feels less like a journey and more like an excuse to discover one of Gauteng’s most exciting dining destinations.

Why it matters

South Africa’s food scene continues to expand beyond its major city centres, with destination restaurants giving travellers another reason to explore neighbouring towns and cities. Amazon shows that a memorable dining experience is about far more than what’s on the plate; it’s the combination of food, hospitality, music and atmosphere that turns a meal into an occasion worth travelling for.
